Sanderson Schools Counseling Mission/Vision Statement

It is our mission to help guide all students academically, socially and mentally in order for them to excel in all areas in order to be productive and successful members of their community and society.

School Counselor’s Role

Professional school counselors serve a vital role in maximizing student achievement. Incorporating leadership, advocacy and collaboration, professional school counselors promote equity and access to opportunities and rigorous educational experiences for all students.

Philosophy Statement

The focus of the school counseling program is on the individual student for whom the counselor strives to provide a meaningful educational experience. The ultimate outcome is for students to maximize their individual potentials and to acquire the skills to meet their individual goals.

Campus/District Guidance Curriculum

The Terrell County Independent School District School Counseling Program is concerned with the academic, career, social and emotional development of all students in relation to their total school experience.

School counseling is an integral part of the school program, consisting of a coordinated plan involving pupils, parents and all members of the professional staff, as well as numerous specialists.  The counselor has the primary role in developing and implementing the school counseling plan.  The cooperation and active participation of teachers and administrators are essential for an effective program.  The classroom teacher, because of the direct involvement with students on a daily basis, plays an essential role in any school counseling program.  The school administration and Board provide the climate and help set appropriate guidelines and conditions for an effective school counseling program to succeed.  Parents and community must be informed regarding the school's program of school counseling services, and an understanding must be developed between home and school regarding these services.  The counselor is the key figure in the program, working directly for the benefit of the students and serving a resource person for parents, teachers and administrators in helping children and youth meet their developmental needs.  The focus of the school counseling program is on the individual student for whom the counselor strives to provide a meaningful educational experience.

Program Goals

All of the activities described in the counselor’s basic job descriptions, separate departmental role descriptions, and program scope and sequence is directed toward the accomplishment of one or more broad program goals as defined below.  These goals are not listed in any priority order.  Priorities vary from grade to grade and even from student to student.  These goals provide the ultimate measure of program success.  They have been designed to benefit students first and foremost.  The school counseling staff is but a part of the delivery system for the goals along with teachers, parents, agency representatives and others.

1. To enable students to be aware of self, to accept responsibility and to develop a positive self-image.

2. To help students identify and reach their academic potential through clearly defined curricula.

3. To identify factors interfering with learning and provide a support system that allows students who fall behind to get extra help.

4. To utilize a variety of measures for assessing students at frequent intervals in order to determine the effectiveness of remediation strategies.

5. To help students choose and advance in programs that will enable them to reach their post-secondary goals.

6. To provide students with opportunities to assess personal characteristics and aptitudes in relationship to career interests.

7. To help students discover the world of work through various career resources and facilitate experiences for direct exposure to a broad spectrum of careers through a variety of methods and technology.

8. To assist students to develop interpersonal relationship skills involving tolerance for diversity and ability to resolve conflicts in a safe and disciplined environment conducive to learning.

9. To counsel students in the development of higher-level thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and coping skills.

10. To facilitate communication between parents and school on behalf of students.

11.To develop staff resources and involve parents in the accomplishment of all the above.

12. To advocate for students in the accomplishment of all the above.


Campus Guidance Curriculum Focus 2016-1017

Due to the ever changing world and the technology resources available to all students at Terrell County Independent School District, internet safety is vital to teach our students.  While the internet can be a very valuable resource, it can also be a place for child predators and other criminals to contact our children.  Therefore, it is of utmost importance we as educators and counselors provide each student with the information and means to remain safe when using the internet.

Special Programs

504 - The 504 Plan is a plan developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives accommodations that will ensure their academic success and access to the learning environment.

This type of plan falls under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This is the part of the federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against public school students with disabilities. That includes students with learning and attention issues who meet certain criteria.

Much like an IEP, a 504 plan can help students with learning and attention issues learn and participate in the general education curriculum. A 504 plan outlines how a child’s specific needs are met with accommodations, modifications and other services. These measures “remove barriers” to learning.

Keep in mind that a student with a 504 plan usually spends the entire school day in a general education classroom. And typically, children who need modifications would have an IEP, not a 504 plan.

IDEA - The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law enacted in 1990 and reauthorized in 1997 and 2004. It is designed to protect the rights of students with disabilities by ensuring that everyone receives a free appropriate public education (FAPE), regardless of ability.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the most important law to understand concerning special education. As the nation's special education law, IDEA provides rights and protections to children with disabilities and to their parents.

Comprehensive Counseling Program

The state of Texas’ Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Plan provides a model for all school counselors to follow in order to ensure that all students in Texas benefit from comprehensive, developmental school guidance and counseling programs.
